E3 2005: New Metal Gear Revealed!
Hideo Kojima speaks about Metal gear Solid: Subsistence. Expect a new camera and online play! First details inside.
May 17, 2005 - At Konami's press conference today, Hideo Kojima announced his latest project, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. The upcoming game will be an expansion upon the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater with some additions and changes that should please fans of the series as well as those who have still been holding out.
Subsistence is similar to the Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance project, which itself was a product that fell somewhere between an add-on and a sequel to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Kojima believes that Subsistence will "complete Snake Eater." It will be the ultimate addition for fans of the series.
Set to release exclusively on the PS2, Metal Gear Solid: Subsistence will feature:
# A New Camera System!
For the first time ever, the Metal Gear series will do away with the conventional top-down camera in favor of a fully free-roaming third-person camera system. Instead of using the old-school system, the new moveable camera will allow players to get a longer range of view.
# Online Play!
Subsistence will also allow for players to participate in online matches separated into two distinct modes. Kojima said that the team is hoping to have at least eight players able to play against each other. The first mode is a Team Battle where two groups can fight against each other. The second mode is called "Snake Vs. Enemies." This mode pits snake and other players against computer controlled enemies in "cat and mouse" gameplay.
The online mode of play will allow players to use all the techniques available to them in the regular game. this includes using the guns and grenades as usual. The CQC techniques are also available for sneaking up on an opponent and quickly taking them out. When asked about how the Snake Vs. Enemies mode will play out, Kojima mentioned that the Camo Index will play an important role, but refused to share any more details.
# Extra Secrets and Goodies!
Players of Subsistence will be able to access a Secret Theater in which there will be all of the movies that have been spreading across the internet from Konami's own Japanese web site. The different movies are all parodies of the storyline in MGS3 where absolutely nothing is sacred and plenty of work is put in in the name of a good joke.
There will also be a Demo Theater mode that will allow players to go back and view any of the cutscenes from within the regular game itself. From Snake's first encounter with Eva to his meetings with The Boss to any other scene, it will all be in here.
# Duel Mode!
This mode of gameplay lets Snake relive all of the boss encounters from Snake Eater. It can be further broken down into two styles. Normal Duel Mode is an exact recreation of those original encounters, while a "tweaked" Duel mode allows gamers to alter a variety of unspecificed options and fiddle with the gameplay in general.
Unfortunately, Mr. Kojima was not speaking much about his intended plans for singleplayer or what the next-generation of game had in store for his tactical stealth action espionage series, but if we can pry details out of him, we certainly will.
Another mystery is when the game will release. We're hoping soon. Right now the the bet is on "early 2006," but that is completely unconfirmed at this point.
