Zwakke punten van de Xbox 360 besproken

Firingsquad heeft alle zwakke punten van de Xbox 360 op een rijtje gezet. De site heeft het artikel niet geschreven om de Xbox 360 af te branden, maar hoopt dat het met de kritiek enige druk kan uitoefenen op Microsoft zodat deze de zwakke punten kan aanpakken. In totaal beschrijft Firingsquad elf zwakke punten, beginnende met de crashes van de Xbox 360, waar elke gebruiker vroeg of laat mee te maken zou krijgen. Deze crashes worden volgens Firingsquad niet veroorzaakt door een oververhitte voeding, maar door de processors en/of de gpu die te warm worden. Een extra ventilator of het vervangen van de reeds aanwezige ventilators met een type dat harder blaast, zou het probleem namelijk oplossen, aldus een experiment van Firingsquad.
De tweede misser is de integratie van MSN Music met Xbox Live, of beter het gebrek aan. Alle hardware is hiervoor aanwezig, maar er is geen mogelijkheid om muziek te kopen via MSN Music en deze via de Xbox 360 af te spelen of op een Windows Media Player te plaatsen. De derde misser betreft HDMI. Hoewel Microsoft beweert dat er een kabel gaat komen om een DVI-signaal om te zetten in een HDMI-signaal, bestaat deze kabel nog niet. Vreemd, daar de Xbox 360 geen moeite zou mogen hebben met het afspelen van HD-films. De vierde misser is de harde schijf. Deze is gewoon te klein en hoewel er via de USB 2.0-aansluiting een externe harde schijf op de Xbox 360 kan worden aangesloten, kan niet alle content richting deze externe schijf worden overgeheveld.
Het vijfde probleem betreft de beveiliging van Xbox Live. Met dit systeem is het namelijk mogelijk om tegen andere Xbox-bezitters te spelen, maar er kunnen ook spellen mee gekocht worden. Het probleem is echter dat er per gebruiker maar een wachtwoord is voor alles. Dit wachtwoord wordt maar een keer gevraagd, als de Xbox 360 wordt aangezet. Luie personen die niet altijd hun wachtwoord willen ingeven, kunnen hierdoor in de problemen komen als anderen van hun Xbox 360 gebruik maken en opeens spellen gaan kopen via Xbox Live.
Als zesde vindt Firingsquad het onbegrijpelijk dat de Xbox 360 geen ingebouwde webbrowser heeft. Zwak punt nummer zeven betreft het afspelen van WMV-HD-films. Het zou mooi zijn geweest als Microsoft ervoor had gezorgd dat bezitters dvd's konden kopen met WMV-HD-content om high-definition films te bekijken. Als achtste punt mist Firingsquad de mogelijkheid om MPEG4/H.264 af te spelen. Doorn nummer negen in het oog van Firingsquad is de afwezigheid van de mogelijkheid om een HDTV te kalibreren. Sommige spellen zijn namelijk te donker of te licht als deze op een HD-televisie worden gespeeld. Het tiende probleem betreft de afspeelkwaliteit van dvd-films. Deze had gewoon een stuk beter kunnen zijn. Als laatste mist Firingsquad drukgevoelige knoppen op de bovenkant van de Xbox-controller. Deze zouden vooral welkom zijn in het spel Project Gotham Racing 3.

I bought the premium 360 yesterday, it was all good on the first day but now i get this 3 light error. i have tried all the examples above and a few other things to no avail. I think this is a total joke for a new machine,

Ive got a xbox 360. What has the same problem has you lot. Mine comes up with the 3 red lights. Ive tried many things with the 360 but i have no joy with it. Now ive got to take it back to the shop where I got it from. I think the Microsoft should take the blame and they should have released the 360 so early. Microsoft took a total joke out of us and making money out of us.

Xbox 360 E74 Error = RRoD?
Ooit gehoord van de Xbox 360 E74 Error? Dit is een foutmelding die je op je Xbox 360 kunt krijgen, waarna de console niet meer werkt. In tegenstelling tot de RRoD issue krijg je bij de E74 error slechts één rood lampje. Wat is E74 precies? Microsoft legt het als volgt uit:
E74 is a general hardware error on Xbox 360 indicated by a single red flashing light in the Xbox Ring of Light and an error message visible on the television. This error is unrelated to the three flashing red lights error and there is not a single root cause.
Toch klopt er iets niet helemaal. Polls op onder andere joystiq en engadget wijzen uit dat dat er heel wat mensen zijn die een E74 error hebben gekregen. Opvallend is dat bij 60% van die mensen de error na de NXE update optrad.
Eerder ontdekte Negative Gamer al via Google Trends dat meldingen over de E74 error op internet pas sinds augustus 2008 zijn begonnen.
Op joystiq staat in één van de reacties een uitleg van iemand die actief Xbox 360 consoles heeft gerepareerd in het verleden:
The E74 which has suddenly become so common shows the same symptoms prior to failure that the three red lights does. Graphic artifacts, in-game freezes, and texture corruption are quite common before the system goes into E74. This was also very common on systems with the three red lights, and, unsurprisingly, the fix is the same as well.
Of the three Xbox 360 consoles I have repaired with E74, reflowing the area around the GPU and CPU, using better thermal paste, and installing an X-clamp replacement has fixed the issue. Not once has the issue been with the scaler (ANA for pre-HDMI, HANA for HDMI systems) as this article suggests. Now, a while back, when the three red lights were common, the problem often was the scaler chip and could be fixed temporarily just by holding the chip down and permanently by reflowing it.
Anyways, what I'm getting at here is that these E74 errors are the three red lights, just presented differently. It's entirely possible for system updates to change the way the system reports errors. Since three red lights indicates "general hardware failure," making the updates affect error reporting does two things for Microsoft:
1. Gives a more specific error message to aid in the repair process.
2. Alleviates them from having to issue a free repair as part of the three year "extended service" plan which was only issued to appease a class-action lawsuit.
Microsoft has done aggressive things in system updates before. For example, when the hypervisor exploit was discovered, Microsoft blocked the ability to downgrade with a system update that actually blew eFuses in the CPU (although modders figured out that by removing a resistor, the system could be upgraded without the eFuses getting blown).
