Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (X360)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 created big expectations amongst the fans of the series and others interested in first person shooters. Screenshots and videos released before the game launched in November 2009 blew everyone away. Many say the game has been overhyped and overrated. Just as many others love the game that is played by thousands of people every day. I am amongst the second group and in this article I share my opinion about this game’s multiplayer.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has a multiplayer that is very fast-paced and intense. A lot is happening at the same time. You got people running around, bullets flying, explosives detonating and objectives being captured. It is exciting, fun and very addicting. I enjoy rushing around with an automatic weapon or sniper and playing for the objective, but it’s a pity that some people like to camp or that they are not playing the objective.

One of the qualities of this game is the reward system that is somewhat RPG like. A player gains experience through killing enemies, completing objectives and finishing challenges. Experience is required to level up. There are 70 levels and by going through them all you can unlock challenges, titles, emblems, weapons and perks (special abilities). When at level 70 a player can enter prestige mode, which resets everything except for you total and emblems and it rewards you with new titles, emblems and a few extra custom classes. Prestige mode can be entered ten times.

I enjoy to level and I enjoy prestige mode. Unlocking things keeps me busy, gives me something to work for and grants my a certain satisfaction. It is a pity tough that many players have hacked themselves to highest level.

Another thing that is good about this game is the class system. The game has the option to create and name your own classes, meaning you can combine different types of primary and secondary weapons, three special abilities called perks and some equipment. It is possible to create a great variaty of classes with this system and when combining and using the right things in the right you can already gain an edge over the enemy.

Everything is balanced really well although some weapons and perks are obviously better and stronger than the rest. It is great that you will have a proper chance to get good scores with any weapon. A downside to this feature is that there are some combinations of weapons and perks that are very annoying and that can ruin a match when used a lot by the enemies.

The game has some pretty awesome maps and also some that are not that good. There is no map that I do not enjoy to play. The multiplayer takes you from little towns in the tropics, to a cold and snowy sub-marine base and then on to the rooftop of a skyscraper.

All of the maps are pretty decent and there is quite a bit of variation, but some are just not right for certain game types. It is also a pity that certain maps have some very annoying camping spots.

It is possible to get ten extra maps by buying the downloadable content for this game. Both packs contain five maps and both feature two maps from the previous Modern Warfare and three complete new maps. I think both packs are pretty decent, but the second pack is the better one. The game will get three more map packs this year and it’s cool that a game is being supported like this.

A partly new addition to Modern Warfare 2 are the killstreak rewards. Of course we had already seen those since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, but now there are a lot of new ones which you can choose from to use in a match. The killstreak rewards are not balanced right. Some rewards are way more powerful than the others and some require to many or not enough kills. It is cool to have a choice and be people to use whatever you like, but the way killstreak rewards work now motivates people to camp too much. There are even people boosting to get ‘nukes’.

Conclusie en beoordeling

Modern Warfare 2 is tons of fun and will keep you enjoyed for a long period of time. There are some flaws in this game, but most of these are actually the fault of the poor, selfish and childish community that exploits the flaws. If you are able to buy this for any price, then you should. If you already have the game, then you should go online and have a blast.

    @T-force

    Kansloos.

  • @Wout0r
