I read some cool ideas that got me thinking.
The game has to make you feel like your a stranger in the town. But you may meet one person whom you talk to everyday and gets you associated with the town and its surroundings such as the person telling you of something that happened back in 1960 when people disappeared and were never heard of again. An example: You meet your friend for the 3rd day now, and he/she has to go to the next biggest farm/town/city to get some tools to finish digging his/her basement or storm cellar(which is near the woods ). Your friend tells you he/she will be back in a couple of hours. This is where it starts getting creepy. Your friend never comes back. You decide to go into his/her house and see if the person left any messages. You walk in and you see food on the oven, already overcooked. You see on the counter a list of things to buy at the nearby farm or town so it looks like the person forgot their list. Right beside the list is some cash, enough to buy your character more light sources or weapons etc…As you walk out the sun is going down so you decide to head back into town. As your're driving down the dirt road you see on the edge of the forest in front of you a dark entity. As you get closer it vanishes. All is well that night except for some spooky dreams.
You decide to head back after dinner to see if your friend has come back but find that they haven't. Then you start driving(the wrong way) and you start drivingaway from the town and home and after awhile(its nighttime by now) you see your friends truck beside the road with its windshield broken and it's door swinging open. Then your hair tingles and you look behind you. You see nothing but a rock face – then lightning strikes! You look up as the lightning flashes and you see a dark figure on top of the cliff looking down at you. You immediatley get back in and drive home.
In order for this game to be awesome is to make the game gradual. What I mean is you don't automatically see 20 hooded figures on your doorstep breaking into your house on the first night. It needs to start out with dark figures dashing across the road infront of you(as far as your headlights can go to make it more scary) then make it where you see more and more of them.
When the hooded creatures are breaking into your house(lets say your hiding in a corner and you're facing the front of the house) you see your windows break as a blast of 'air' propels the glass into your house. Or have the door knob slowly turn and then see it burst open only to see there's nothing there. But wait! Thats not all. You hear foots steps behind you(your character is hiding behidn a wall next to the hallway to the kitchen) and you continue to hear noises like footsteps going up the stairs(but you can't see anything because its really dark). You continue to hear strange things upstairs until everything goes silent except for the creaking door. As you get up you make the mistake on stepping on some glass and you then dash for your car and get out.
