Konami has announced Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, an-open world game running in Hideo Kojima's new Fox Engine.

The game was revealed during a Tokyo event held to mark the series' 25th anniversary. Creator Hideo Kojima said on stage that the game was intended as "a challenge from Kojima Productions to the world." While photography was forbidden at the event, two images have since appeared on social media (one from Famitsu), and it appears the game's protagonist is Big Boss.

A brief gameplay demo showed Snake crawling to avoid searchlights and taking down guards before getting into a jeep and calling in a helicopter. Billed, according to Kotaku, as "a game without game over", Ground Zeroes doesn't end when a player is spotted; instead, it's just the beginning, as the focus shifts from stealth to escape.

Running in Kojima's cross-platform Fox Engine on a PC at current-gen specs, Ground Zeroes has apparently been designed with Xbox 360 and PS3 in mind. No release date or target platforms were announced.

It's an intriguing direction for the series, and a genuine surprise: it was expected that the event would focus on Fox Engine, with no new game announcements to avoid undermining anticipation for Platinum Games action title Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

A Metal Gear Solid movie was also announced. Avi Arad, producer of several comic book movies including The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. A social game, Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops, was also announced, developed in Unity by Gree.
