1. NHL 2K11

Re: NHL 2K11

Gamespot geeft hem een 5,5.

The Good
- Smart MotionPlus stickhandling controls let you pull off fancy moves
- Lots of modes of play, including the minigame-focused
- Road to the Cup
- Great visual presentation

The Bad
- Sometimes unresponsive motion controls, especially when taking quick shots
- Much of the league, team, and player data is way out of date
- Online connection problems and serious lag can make games unplayable

It's actually pretty odd that NHL 2K11 turned out so mediocre. 2K Sports dumped the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game to focus solely on the Wii edition this year, so you might think that the game would be better, not markedly worse and loaded down with a lot of outdated data. Regardless of the reasons behind this year's problems, 2K is going to have to go back to the dressing room for next year's Wii game and work on making the motion controls more responsive.

NHL 2K11 had a lot of potential, a notion that’s accentuated once you feel the one-to-one dekeing for the first time. Sadly once you spend some time with the title you’ll realize that the shooting mechanics and AI could’ve really used some fine tuning to avoid some of the needless frustrations. If you’re a diehard hockey fan I think there will be enough for you to enjoy to warrant a look, but I’d recommend picking up a Classic Controller for maximum enjoyment.

7.5
Presentation
Cool team introductions do a nice job of building excitement. Menu systems are delivered with vintage 2K style.

8.0
Graphics
Some player models look better than others. Animations are solid and framerate stays smooth as long as you aren’t playing online.

7.0
Sound
The announcers sound good in the booth, but their interactions with one another are limited. The crowd could be more alive. Soundtrack suits the action.

6.0
Gameplay
It’s too bad that there are so many frustrations when using the Wii Remote. Dekes work well, but other actions can be too frustrating. Classic Controller performs well enough.

6.5
Lasting Appeal
There’s a good list of modes, but they still rely on the gameplay that brings too many frustrations to the table.

6.5

NHL 2K11 Is Now Exclusive For Nintendo Wii

Hockey series taking a year off on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Take-Two announced the company is taking a year off from releasing a hockey title on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. NHL 2K11 will now be an exclusive title for the Nintendo Wii. CEO and President Ben Feder says the series needs a breather before returning next year.

"We're taking the year off on our PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions," explained Feder. "We're doing that because we're so committed to competing and winning, and we think those platforms need a breather so we can go back to redesign and rethink as opposed to continuing to iterate."

"As a result of that, the following year we'll come back a lot stronger," he added. "We're continuing to develop for the Wii, which we think is exciting. We have built a presence, in Canada specifically, on the Wii title with the help and support of Nintendo, for which we're very grateful."

NHL 2k11 is scheduled to ship during Take-Two's fiscal fourth quarter, which starts on August 1 2010, and ends on October 31, 2010.

    van joystiq:

Update: We reached out to Take-Two for a more comprehensive explanation of the choice to ditch PS3 and Xbox 360 this year. Here's what the spoksperson said: "We have decided to reevaluate our NHL strategy and will only be releasing NHL 2K11 for the Wii in fiscal year 2010. We want to become a stronger competitor in this category and taking a year off on PS3 and Xbox 360, while focusing on making the best possible game for Wii, should allow us to accomplish that goal."

During the recent Take-Two fiscal earnings report, we noticed something a bit off. See, back in December when we got our last update from the company, NHL 2K11 was missing entirely from the report. This suggested that there wouldn't be another game in the series.

Well, today Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick revealed that another iteration in the series is in the works – and it's exclusively for the Wii. "As far as NHL, we're taking a year off on PS3 and Xbox 360 to refine, redesign and re-think," Zelnick remarked during the earnings report. So while Canadians* will have fewer options when it comes to platform, knowing the series hasn't been retired is a good thing, right?

*Come on, we all know Canadians are the only ones playing these games

Jammer. :(….Maar goed nieuws voor Wii bezitters uiteraard !
    Geweldige hockey serie imo.
